Welcome to our Girl Talk page, where real conversation
about all things pertinent comes to life! You know those 'pertinent'
things -

"will I ever find true love?"
"will I ever figure out just what my purpose is?",
or the ever-plaguing, "just where did I put my keys?!"

If you can't seem to keep your relationship running smoothly;
figure out what your personal mission is; or keep up with your
keys, cell, and kids all at the same time, then this might be the
option for you.

Dear Dr. Bell,

Recently, I was in the kitchen on a Saturday morning cooking eggs with my 7 year old daughter.  As we
cooked, she was talking about her life and dreams and plans, in a 7 year old kind of way.  She was saying
that when she “grows up” she wants to be a scientist like her aunt ; a veterinarian – because she loves
cute little puppies; an artist – because she loves to draw; and an actress – because of what she thinks will be
an unlimited amount of fabulous clothes, shoes and handbags.
As she went on and on discussing her future plans, it got me to thinking.  I'm a 30-ish year old wife, mother,
daughter, sister, friend, and (for 40+ hours a week) –fashion magazine editor.  As great as that may sound, I
realized in that moment that I have dreams too.  The ones that were there when I was 7 are still with me.  So,
in a moment of bravado, I decided to voice my "when I grow up" stories as well.  As I began to say aloud
“…that's great honey! When I grow up, I want to be a writer – novelist maybe, a jewelry designer, and
photographer…” she interrupted me with a giggle and said “Mom, you
are grown up.  You're done,
you're finished already!”
My question to you is: do 7 year old dreams end when we hit those dreaded 30's?  Am I still allowed to have
dreams and strive to attain them, or am I ‘done, finished', and cooked like those eggs?...

Dear Confused Dreamer,

I give you permission to dream your dreams and unapologetically strive to attain them.  You are never too old to
possess your dreams.  This reminds me of when I was in graduate school.  There was a student in her 60’s who said
“I’ve always dreamt of being a psychologist since I was a little girl”.  Well, she completed the program, and by
doing so, fulfilled one of her lifelong dreams!
I share this story to encourage you to chase your dreams no matter how old you are.  As you do so, remember to
surround yourself with people who support your efforts and can encourage you along the way.  A lot of times we
allow ourselves to get in the way of pursuing our dreams by thinking negatively – “I’m too old” or “it’s too late to
change careers”.  Remember, boldness is key!  And do some research and talk to folks who are working in the
field.
In the meantime, Happy Dreaming!
